This week there are eight crucial quarterfinals second leg ties, four each in the Champions League and the Europa League with the teams battling it out for a place in the semifinals of European football’s premier competitions.

The first legs were played last week and produced some surprising results, as well as a high number of goals across each of the eight games. However, in almost all the games, there is still plenty to play for with no side yet secure of reaching the semis, though some would require a huge downturn in form and a freak result in order to stop them doing so.

Let’s now go through each of the four games in the Champions League, looking at how we think the second leg will go as well as giving you our best tips for each of the four matches taking place this week.

We will then bring you our shortened tips for the Europa League games on Thursday.

Let’s start with the top competition that sees matches played on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th April, the Champions League, which produced some surprising results in the first leg of the quarterfinals last time out.

  • Champions League Quarter Finals – Second Leg

As things stand (first leg score in brackets):

  • Manchester City (0) v (3) Liverpool
  • AS Roma (1) v (4) Barcelona
  • Bayern Munich (2) v (1) Sevilla
  • Real Madrid (3) v (0) Juventus

Tuesday 10th April

Manchester City (4/9) v Liverpool (5/1) (19/5 the draw)

Last Wednesday night, Liverpool produced their best all-round performance of the season to defeat Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield, blowing City away with a blistering first half attacking display and then defending resolutely in the second period to keep City without an away goal. That gives the Anfield team a huge advantage heading into the second leg at the Etihad on Tuesday night.

City though have beaten Liverpool 5-0 already earlier in the season, so they know they can score goals against their opponents, albeit that defeat was enabled by Sadio Mane’s first half dismissal. City also come into this game having lost their last two matches, after a surprising 2-3 home defeat to Manchester United at the weekend. A result which meant they have not yet clinched the league title.

This is a game City need to score at least three goals just to force extra time, so I am expecting them to come at Liverpool, but while they are so dangerous in attack, the fact that Liverpool are equally dangerous on the counter is my real concern. While I can see City scoring goals, I can see Liverpool getting one or maybe two back and that puts City in real trouble thanks to the away goals rule.

Top Tip: City to win and both teams to score – 7/5 with Coral Sport

AS Roma (19/5) v Barcelona (4/6) (16/5 the draw)

AS Roma may feel a little aggrieved that they come into this game 4-1 down. They battled well in the Nou Camp and but for some slipshod defending and some wasteful finishing, they could be really in this tie with a good chance. However those errors were taken full advantage of by Barcelona who go into the game in Rome with a comfortable 3-goal lead.

In truth, I can’t make a big case for AS Roma winning this one. They are a talented side, but they are somewhat erratic (as the weekend home defeat to Fiorentina shows) and with a number of players potentially injured for the game, including the key midfielder Radja Nainggolan, I think this means Barcelona will progress relatively comfortably.

I don’t think this is the best Barcelona side of modern times, but they are one of the most effective and certainly one of the better ones in terms of defensive play. While I can see Roma scoring, I also feel Barcelona will find the net too and likely earn the draw they need to take them through comfortably.

Top Tip – AS Roma v Barcelona – Draw – 16/5 with Coral Sport

Wednesday 11th April

Bayern Munich (1/5) v Sevilla (14/1) (11/2 the draw)

Bayern came back well after going a goal down early in Seville to earn a 2-1 win and put themselves in command of this tie. The German side have an outstanding record at home this season, not losing a single game in the Bundesliga or Champions League at the Allianz Arena and that puts Sevilla hugely up against it for this second leg.

The Spanish side may well have done well to get a brilliant win at Old Trafford in the last round, but even one goal is not enough here and the likelihood of them scoring two or three against a team that have conceded so few goals at home this season and who have swept most sides aside, is very slim indeed.

Of all the matches in the Champions League this week this is the one I feel has the most chance of being a thumping win for one team and I am expecting that team to be Bayern and for them to claim theiur seventh semi final spot in this competition in the last eight seasons.

Top Tip – Bayern to win and over 3.5 goals – 23/20 with Coral.

Real Madrid (8/13) v Juventus (21/5) (3/1 the draw)

The first leg of this game will be mostly remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo’s sublime overhead kick that put Real Madrid in total control of this tie. Juventus may well have done well in the second leg against Spurs in the last round, but coming back from 3-0 against the holders on their own pitch is a monumental task.

It’s fair to say that Juventus somewhat imploded once again against Real last time out, with the Spanish side taking them apart with the same precision that they did in the final of the competition back in May 2017. Also without several key players through suspension and injury, Juventus may well be a little lacking in quality too.

As such, there’s no other result here for me other than a comfortable win for the home side and if they progress, it will be the eighth successive year that Real have reached the semi-finals.

Top Tip – Real Madrid to win and both teams to score – 2/1 with Coral.
