Is there a formula to making money fast?
Some see getting rich quick as the ultimate dream. Some see it as a fool’s errand. But is there a way to making it into a reality? Claude Shannon and John L Kelly Jr explore this in Fortune’s Formula.
These two scientists take a deep dive into lots of strategies, from those used at the roulette tables to financial trading tricks. They even look at the strategy the famous Warren Buffett used to use to make his mountain of money.
This isn’t one of those things we’d recommend trying out for yourself, but it sure is interesting to read about!
When nerds took down Las Vegas
This is one of those books about casino games that we’re sure you’ve already heard about. Even if the name is new to you, we’re sure the story isn’t.
It’s Ben Mezrich’s Bringing Down The House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T Students who took Las Vegas for Millions. And really, the title says it all.
This details a plan to get super brainy students to count cards at blackjack tables in order to give them an edge over the house. And the crazy thing is, it actually worked.
But having said that, the casinos weren’t actually too pleased when they realised what was going on.
We’d highly recommend this book, it’s an absolute classic. In fact, the story is so compelling, they’ve even made a movie out of it.
Looking under the hood of gambling
Squares & Sharps, Suckers & Sharks is Joseph Buchdahl’s comprehensive account of the science, psychology and philosophy of gambling. Put quite simply, why do we do it and what makes it so compelling?
This is one of those books about casino games that will really make you think.
It’s a long read, but a good’un. Easy to digest and really interesting, especially if you’re the sort of person who likes a flutter on bet365 (bonus code), Live Casinos, casino home parties or anywhere else for that matter.
The pop culture explainer
Learning from Las Vegas by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Steven Izenour was first published in 1972. And this book takes a really interesting look at the impact Las Vegas has had on wider culture.
