The dates for the Women’s 2023 T20 World Cup
Funnily enough, the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup was originally supposed to be held in late 2022. Like many different events over the last few years, including the Olympics, we’re no strangers to date changes for sports events any more.
What was the reason the T20 World Cup moved dates? Well it was actually because of the Men’s soccer world cup in Qatar. Because the T20 was originally scheduled at the same time as the men’s soccer world cup took place, they decided to switch it so there was no more clashing.
So now the Women’s T20 is going to start on 10 February. And it ends 16 days later on 26 February, 2023.
The locations
This year’s T20 World Cup is taking place in South Africa. The proud host nation is spreading its venues across three cities in the country. Cape Town and Paarl, which are both in the west of the country, and Gqebera, which is in the east.
There is a sizeable stadium in each city that will host the matches. In Cape Town, it’s Newlands Cricket Ground, which has an impressive capacity for 25,000 people. The smallest of the three venues is in Paarl. That city’s Boland Park can accomodate 10,000 spectators. Then sandwiched in the middle is St George’s Park Cricket Ground, with a 19,000-strong capacity.
2023 T20 World Cup teams
Everyone loves cheering on their own country on the world stage. For the 2023 T20 World Cup, 10 countries get that opportunity.
As host nation, South Africa gained automatic qualification. Most other teams qualified by virtue of topping the T20 rankings. They are Australia (who are also defending champions), England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
However, two additional teams had to qualify by playing in qualifier matches. Those two countries are Bangladesh and Ireland.
There are 15 players on each country’s team and they all have to be pre-selected in advance of the World Cup kick off in February.
