Landing the country’s first major football trophy since the 1966 World Cup, Sarina Wegmann’s team defeated Germany in an exciting final to clinch a 2-1 win and win their first piece of major silverware. The team is now amongst the favourites to win this summer’s Women’s World Cup which takes place in Australia and New Zealand.

After losing their opening game of the World Cup 2-1 to Saudi Arabla, Argentina effectively were playing knockout football from then on but inspired by Lionel Messi, the team rallied to come through the Group Stages and Knockout phase to reach the final where after an enthralling game, they clinched the World Cup on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

It is incredible to think that Walid Regragui had only been in the job a matter of months before he took Morocco to the World Cup Finals. There he oversaw his team coming through a group that also consisted of Belgium and Croatia, defeating the former, before they also despatched Spain (on penalties) and Portugal on their way to becoming the first African team to reach a World Cup semi final. There they lost 2-0 to France before losing the third place playoff 2-1 to Croatia.

The 18-year old was recently named Junior BBC Sports Personality of the year after she won gold on the floor and silver in the team but her bronze in the all-around event was a historic one for women’s gymnastics as she was the first to claim any individual all-around medal. She repeat her success on the floor and team silver at the European Championships a few months later.

Her 5 assists and 6 goals were tournament leading marks and she also claimed the BBC Sports Personality of the Year trophy a few weeks back.

Lionel Messi had won everything there was to win in football, bar the World Cup. Now at age 35, he has achieved that and cemented his legacy as arguably the greatest player of all time. He played an inspirational role in firing Argentina to victory scoring seven goals adding four assists and producing moments of magic that will define his legacy for years to come.
