US PGA background

To understand just what a big deal the US PGA is, it’s good to go back in time a little. This major is run by the Professional Golfers Association of America.

In fact, it was the first event the newly formed group held, way back in October 1916. The first ever venue was Siwanoy Country Club, Bronxville, New York.

Back then, the prizes weren’t half shabby either. Jim Barnes was the first title winner and he got a diamond-studded gold medal, as well as $500 cash. A tidy sum in those days.

In all other majors, amatures can enter. But that’s not the case with the PGA. Some say it means that the PGA Championships is the purists’ major. And it makes it all the more interesting to look at past winners…

To date, the players with the most ever PGA Championship wins under their belts are Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen with five wins each. Nicklaus also has four runner-up finishes, making him arguably the most successful PGA Championship player in history.
