Rangers have confirmed the dismissal of head coach Russell Martin following a poor run of results that left the Glasgow club far from its early-season ambitions. The decision, made after an emergency board meeting, ends Martin’s reign after just over three months in charge.
Martin arrived at Ibrox in June with a reputation for implementing a progressive, possession-based style of play. However, his ideas never fully took hold, and a string of lacklustre performances saw pressure mount rapidly from supporters and pundits alike.
A 1–1 home draw against Falkirk proved to be the final straw, leaving Rangers eighth in the Scottish Premiership table and already trailing the leaders by double digits.

From the outset, Martin faced an uphill task. Early exits from Europe and inconsistent league form quickly soured the mood, while the team’s defensive vulnerabilities became a recurring issue. Despite flashes of promise in attack, Rangers failed to find balance or identity on the pitch.
Behind the scenes, there were also whispers of tension within the dressing room, with reports suggesting some senior players were uncertain about the manager’s methods.
The club’s leadership released a short statement thanking Martin and his staff for their efforts and reaffirming their commitment to “delivering the standards expected of Rangers Football Club.”
Attention now turns to who will lead the club forward. Former boss Steven Gerrard has already been linked with a sensational return, while several other names from both Scotland and abroad are believed to be under consideration.
However, Saturday evening saw a shocking development when Gerrard sensationally withdrew from contention to return to Ibrox as the new manager.
Why Gerrard refused the role remains unclear, but developments thereafter revealed that former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is the new favourite for the permanent position with former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche also believed to be in the running.
Whoever takes the reins will inherit a squad short on confidence but full of potential. The task ahead is daunting: reigniting belief, repairing the connection with supporters, and salvaging a campaign that has stumbled badly out of the gate.
For Rangers fans, it’s another period of transition — and another reminder that at Ibrox, patience is always in short supply when the results don’t follow.
