Last night we saw the fifth set of games in the Group Stages of the Champions League and things have become much clearer in terms of which teams will be contesting the Knockout Phase of the competition in the New Year.

Of course, with one final set of games to come next week (which we will look at in more detail) things are not 100% sorted across the eight groups just yet, but the look of the knockout phase is definitely a lot clearer after Matchday 5.

And also, the teams dropping into the Europa League by finishing third in their group are also a little clearer following this week’s action.

A team shown in Italics means that they have secured their current position in the group and cannot change it in the final game next week.

What is left to be decided on Matchday 6?

Atletico Madrid will qualify for the Europa League with a win over FC Porto.

Atletico will also qualify if Bayer Leverkusen were to lose their game with Club Brugge.

However, if Atletico lose, then a win or draw for Leverkusen would see them qualify for the Europa League Playoff Stage in third.

A Club Brugge win sees them top the group. They will also top the group regardless of their result if FC Porto were to lose their game.

However, if Club Brugge draw, then a win for FC Porto would see Porto top the group.

Similarly, if Club Brugge lose their game, then a win or draw for FC Porto would see them top the group.

What is left to be decided on Matchday 6?

All teams can still qualify from this group, as well as being able to finish 3rd or bottom of the group.

If any team wins their Matchday 6 fixture, then they will qualify for the Knockout Phase of the Champions League.

A draw for Tottenham would be enough for them to go through. Similarly a draw for Lisbon would also be enough for them to progress.

If Tottenham lose and Sporting Lisbon & Frankfurt draw, then Lisbon would qualify for the Knockout Phase alongside Marseille. Tottenham would finish 3rd and Eintracht fourth.

If Frankfurt win their game, then they would qualify alongside the winner of the Marseille v Spurs game, or Spurs if that game finishes in a draw.

Matchday 6 Fixtures

  • Marseille v Tottenham (1st Nov 8pm)
  • Sporting Lisbon v Eintracht Frankfurt (1st Nov 8pm)

Group E

  • RB Salzburg 1-2 Chelsea (Adamu 49),(Kovacic 23, Havertz 64)
  • Dinamo Zagreb 0-4 Milan (Gabbia 39, Leao 49, Giroud 59(p), Ljubcic 69 og)

What is left to be decided on Matchday 6?

Chelsea are already confirmed as group winners as they have a better head to head record over Milan.

A win or draw for Milan with Red Bull Salzburg would see them qualify for the knockout phase.

A win for Salzburg would see them qualify for the knockout phase ahead of Milan.

Dinamo Zagreb must win and hope Salzburg lose to finish 3rd in the group to qualify for the Europa League Playoff Stage.

What is left to be decided on Matchday 6?

Celtic are already confirmed as finishing bottom of the group and Real Madrid are confirmed as one of the qualifiers, but not yet group winners.

If Real Madrid win, then they win the group.

Real will also win the group if Leipzig lose to Shakhtar Donetsk.

If Real lose to Celtic and RB Leipzig draw or win against Donetsk, then Leipzig would top the group with Real qualifying in second.

Shakhtar Donetsk must beat RB Leipzig in order to qualify with Real Madrid for the Knockout Phase.
