Our Best Sporting Moments of 2024
Darts – Luke Littler Emerges As A New Superstar Aged 16
The 2024 PDC World Darts Championship saw the emergence of a new superstar. Aged just 16, Luke Littler stunned the world with his poise, nerveless performance and ability as he beat many seasoned professionals on his way to the World Championship Final.
He would ultimately fall short against World Number 1 Luke Humphries he did end the season winning the Premier League, Grand Slam of Darts and World Series Finals before starting his campaign in the 2025 World Darts Championship.
In the meantime he was named Young BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year and the winner of the Young BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year.
Football – Manchester City Make It Four-In-A-Row
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola led his team to an unprecedented four Premier League titles in a row this past summer. The Citizens held off a stubborn challenge from Arsenal over the last couple of months of the season to earn yet another title victory.
However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for City who were dumped out of the Champions League by Real Madrid and who then surprisingly lost the FA Cup Final, losing to rivals Manchester United.
After a solid start to the 2024/25 season, City have won just one of their last eleven games seeing them drop off the race at the top of the table at present.
Football – Jurgen Klopp Leaves Liverpool
All good things must come to an end and when Jurgen Klopp announced he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season, many wondered if the club would implode. While the Reds didn’t push Man City for the title, they did win the Carabao Cup and in an emotional final game at home, Klopp celebrated with a victory in front of a packed Anfield where he and his backroom team were honoured by the club and the fans. After a break from the game, Klopp has since moved on to be the director of football at Red Bull, overseeing their clubs in Salzburg and Leipzig.

Athletics – Keely Hodgkinson Wins 800m Gold and Sports Personality of the Year!
While Team GB enjoyed another successful Olympics in terms of medals won, there were not too many highlights on the track for the team. That was until Keely Hodgkinson showcased her world-leading talent to win the 800m in comfortable fashion. After a dominant year on the track, she followed that by landing a joyous Gold and then crowned it by becoming the BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year just a few days ago.
Boxing – Usyk Defeats Fury & Dubois Knocks Out Joshua
There were two big boxing bouts this year, the first of which saw the Heavyweight title unified for the first time since 1999. Between them, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk held all the belts when they met back in May and in the end, despite a tight contest, it was Usyk who came out the deserved victor, albeit only by a split decision.
Usyk relinquished his IBA belt to fight Fury in a rematch, which led to two British fighters Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua meet for the vacated belt. In a stunning but richly deserved upset, Dubois knocked out the more experienced Joshua to land his first world title.
Fury and Usyk meet again on the 23rd December with the winner pencilled in to take on Dubois in another potential unification bout later in 2025.
American Football – Chiefs Double Up Super Bowl Success – Go For Three-Peat
Across the pond, the Kansas City Chiefs claimed their second successive Super Bowl when they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Las Vegas. The victory was the Chiefs third in five years and the fourth time in five years they had reached the Super Bowl. The win followed the Chiefs 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Arizona in 2022 and with a 13-1 record in the AFC at the time of writing, they are going strong for a rare three-peat Super Bowl success.
Our Most Disappointing Sporting Moment of 2024
Football – Southgate’s England Lose Euro 2024 Final To Spain
Three years on from losing the 2020 European Championships Final to Italy, England once again had made their way, somewhat stoically at times, to the Euro 2024 Final. There they faced a Spain team that had been excellent in the tournament thus far. Spain dominated the game and deservedly led before Cole Palmer levelled for England. Rather than kick on from this as Spain looked weary, England sat back and Spain scored late on to take the win. It was another golden opportunity missed for Southgate’s team.
Saddest & Most Inspiring Sporting Moment of 2024
Cycling – Sir Chris Hoy Reveals Terminal Cancer Diagnosis
As a cyclist, Sir Chris Hoy looked unbeatable at times, especially at the Olympics. He also proved to be an excellent commentator for the BBC on its cycling coverage. It was a huge shock and upsetting to hear him reveal his terminal cancer diagnosis with dignity and a complete lack of self-pity. His attitude since is an example to all.
Strangest Sporting Moment of 2024
Olympics – RayGun’s Breakdancing Routine
Raygun
It was a strange decision to put breakdancing into the Olympics. All competitors, however tried their best and then RayGun, Australia’s representative, put in a performance that was, to be polite, eccentric.
As one commentator said, “She didn’t break dance, she broke dancing.”
Sadly, a campaign of online abuse followed, but regardless of the ridiculous abuse that followed, this is without doubt the strangest moment of the 2024 Olympic games and the weirdest sporting moment of the year.
Funniest Sporting Moment of 2024
And finally, the funniest sporting moment of 2024 goes to Hibernian’s defender Nectarios Triantis who produced this moment of magic in his team’s 3-1 defeat to Rangers back in March 2024.
Hibs, already behind in the game, were awarded a free kick in the Rangers half, which Triantis tried to take quickly driving the ball forward.
Unfortunately for Triantis, team mate Joe Newell was around ten yards away and the ball crashed into the unfortunate players face. Knocking him to the floor.
The drama didn’t end there. After hitting Newell smack in the face, the ball then rebounded and smacked another Hibs player Will Fish in the face, sending him to the turf too. Then for added humiliation the ball hit Newell again as he lay on the floor!
