After making his wishes to move away from Palace known early in the window, shortly after Marc Guehi had left to to join Man City, it seemed Mateta would have plenty of potential suitors.
Nottingham Forest came in for him initially but their interest seemed to dim when AC Milan showed an interest. A fee was agreed between the clubs, but Mateta failed a medical due to a knee issue in Paris, meaning Milan called off the deal.
With Palace set to sign Jorgen Strand-Larsen from Wolves for £48m, this leaves Mateta in limbo with his place in the first team now seemingly under threat.
Nottingham Forest made three separate bids for Celtic’s Engels, but were rebuffed each time by Celtic, whose interim manager Martin O’Neill had expressed his desire for Engels to stay at the club.
Tottenham showed a real interest in Liverpool’s Scottish international skipper and a £5m deal was seemingly agreed, but a combination of Liverpool’s increasing injury problems in the full-back position and their inability to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at AS Roma meant the deal did not go ahead.
Arsenal were apparently keen on the Italian midfielders, but Newcastle moved to rebuff any interest from the Gunners before the deal even got off the ground.
Fulham’s in-form winger is out of contract at the end of the season and Everton submitted an initial bid for the Welsh star, but that was immediately rejected by the London side.
Palace also went for Everton’s winger Dwight McNeil on deadline day, initially thought to be a permanent transfer for around £20m, Palace’s offer of a loan instead was rejected by Everton.

It was one of the quietest transfer deadline days in memory as most Premier League clubs had their deals sorted in advance of the final day, or just avoided making too many moves in the January window altogether.
A couple of teams made more of a splash with deals. West Ham were busy earlier on in the window both in selling players and bringing in new faces. It remains to be seen whether it is enough to save their Premier League status.
Crystal Palace saw Marc Guehi leave, while Jean-Philippe Mateta stayed, probably two deals that will disappoint Eagles fans, although they did spend big, landing Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen and Brennan Johnson in deals worth over £80m. They also took Evan Guessand on loan from Aston Villa.
Liverpool moved to strengthen their defensive options with a £60m deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, who was also wanted by Arsenal and Chelsea. However, it was the Reds who secured the defender, although he will remain at Rennes until the end of the season.
Overall though, this was a winter transfer window with relatively little activity from teams in the Premier League, although some significant moves were made earlier in the window, notably by Manchester City.
The window is now closed and will not reopen again until the end of the season. However, with the FIFA World Cup also on the horizon, it could be a busy summer before and after the finals as teams seek to snap up the players they want ahead of the new 2026/27 season start in August.
