Matches between the top teams in England and their counterparts from Scotland are generally a pretty rare occurrence, so when they do happen, they tend to be very big occasions both north and south of the border.
Well this week, we have the first of two such games as Liverpool will host Rangers at Anfield in the Champions League Group Stage Matchday 3, before they then travel north to Glasgow and the Ibrox Stadium for the second leg next week.
This will be one of the biggest bet365 games for betting on this week in the Champions League, especially in England and Scotland and especially across the cities of Glasgow and Liverpool.

And indeed, that is where we will start.

Champions League 2022 – Matchday 3
The next instalment in the England v Scotland club game series takes place this week at Anfield as Liverpool will host Rangers in both teams third game of the Group Stage.
Despite both teams being regulars on the European scene, this will be the first ever time that the two teams have met competitively and both have very good reasons to want to win the game.
Liverpool need to continue their bounce back from a 4-1 hammering by Napoli on Matchday 1 and a second win against Rangers would keep them in touch with the top teams in the group, perhaps even moving the Reds up to top spot, depending on how results go on the night.
Rangers though badly need the points after two damaging defeats against Napoli and Ajax in their first two games has left them with no points and a markedly inferior goal difference compared to any of the other teams in Group A.
With the Matchday 4 encounter between the two coming up next week, these two games could well be pivotal in each team’s chances of making it into the knockout phase of this competition, or even the third-place finish required for a place in the Europa League after the World Cup has finished next year.
Liverpool v Rangers Team News
Liverpool still have a number of players either confirmed out, or doubtful for the game this week.
Andy Robertson is close to a return to action, as is Ibrahima Konate and Curtis Jones. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are both out though while Calvin Ramsey could step up his recovery from injury by playing in some U21 games.
Reserve keeper Caoimhin Kelleher is also on the brink of a return to the first team squad after playing for the U21s at the weekend.
Rangers have James Sands, John Souttar, Fil Helander, Ianis Hagi and Nmandi Ofoborh already confirmed as missing the Liverpool game and there are also doubts over whether four more players, Jon McLaughlin, Tom Lawrence, Alex Lowry and Kemar Roofe will be fit.
Ryan Kent though will be fit and able to face his former club, as will defender Ben Davies who left Liverpool for Rangers this summer without playing a competitive game for the Reds.
Possible Teams
- Liverpool – 4-3-3- Allison, Alexander-Arnold, Tsimikas, Van Dijk, Matip, Fabinho, Thiago, Elliott, Diaz, Firmino, Salah
- Rangers – 4-2-3-1 – McGregor, Tavernier, Barisic, Goldson, Davies, Jack, Lundstram, Kent, Matondo, Arfield, Colak
Bet365 Betting Odds And Tip
- Liverpool to win – 1/7
- Draw – 15/2
- Rangers to win – 14/1
Clearly the bookmakers fancy a Liverpool win here but as we have seen this season, the Reds are susceptible and the 14/1 on Rangers and especially the 15/2 on the draw are tempting when you consider how well Rangers did in Europe last year.
I still feel Liverpool win the game, but the 1/7 is not a good value bet in my view, so instead take the Liverpool to win, both teams to score – yes bet option which is a much more appealing 6/4.
