Ever since the start of the competition, there have been many different shocking scorelines in Premier League history.
Indeed, the first live game on a Sunday in the EPL saw unfancied Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool 1-0, thanks to a goal from Teddy Sheringham.
Of course, that was a surprise win. But it was not truly shocking. Those results, such as Manchester United beating Arsenal 8-2, Liverpool's 7-0 win over Manchester United and Arsenal's 5-1 win over Manchester City come along considerably less frequently.
How often do we see these shocking EPL results? Are they worth having a bet on? And could any more shocking scorelines in the Premier League happen again this season?
We decided to delve a little deeper into the most surprising and shocking scorelines in Premier League history.
Alex Ferguson's Champions headed to the south coast to take on Southampton and came away on the back of a thumping defeat. Saints scored six, Eyal Berkovic and Egil Ostenstadt scoring two, with Matt Le Tissier and a Gary Neville own goal completing their scoring. United had Roy Keane sent off and Alex Ferguson famously blamed the defeat on Manchester United's grey kit being difficult to ascertain from the crowd.
Kevin Keegan's entertainers were at their extravagant best when defeating Champions Manchester United 5-0 at St James' Park in October 1996. This shocking scoreline saw five different players score for the Magpies, Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and lastly a sumptuous chipped finish from Philippe Albert handed the Geordies a massive win.
In 1999, Chelsea put United to the sword at Stamford Bridge. Gus Poyet and Chris Sutton put the home side 2-0 up before Nicky Butt was sent off for United. Chelsea added three second-half strikes, another for Gus Poyet, a Henning Berg own goal and lastly for Jody Morris to complete a hige win over the team that had won the treble the previous season.
An end of season game with little to play for saw Middlesbrough trounce Sven Goran Eriksson's Manchester City. With the game at 0-0 Richard Dunne was red-carded for a City team that appeared to be already on their holidays. Stewart Downing scored the penalty and added another and further goals including an Afonso Alves hat-trick saw City handed a crushing defeat.
Man Utd inflicted Arsenal's heaviest league defeat since 1927 in an amazing August match-up at Old Trafford. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was sent off, as was defender Carl Jenkinson, but by then United had already rattled in six goals. Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick, Ashley Young two with single strikes for Danny Welbeck, Nani and Park Ji-Sung completing a stunning win for the Red Devils.

The top two in the Premier League met at Old Trafford in October 2011 and it was the David Silva-inspired Manchester City that came away with a stunning win. Mario Balotelli scored the first of his two goals to give City the lead, revealing a t-shirt with “Why Always Me?” written on it. Jonny Evans red card in the second half opened the game and City added further goals from Balotelli, Aguero and three late goals, two from Edin Dzeko and the last from the brilliant Silva to hand United their biggest derby defeat in history.
Leicester put Southampton to the sword in a stunning game at St. Marys in 2018. Ben Chilwell handed the Foxes the lead before Ryan Bertrand was sent off after his yellow card was upgraded to red by VAR. After that Leicester ran riot with Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy both scoring hat-tricks and further strikes from Youri Tielemans and James Maddison handing them a 9-0 win. Still the biggest away win in Premier League history.
Despite going down to a second minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes, Jose Mourinho led his Spurs team to a 6-1 victory at Old Trafford against his former club. Both Heung-min Son and Harry Kane scored twice, added to goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier. United played most of the game with 10-men after Anthony Martial's sending off midway through the first half.
A stunning performance from Aston Villa saw them thrash Jurgen Klopp's defending Champions in incredible style. Jack Grealish set up five goals and scored two himself, Ollie Watkins grabbed a hat-trick while John McGinn and Ross Barkley added the other goals for the Villains against the hapless Reds for whom Mo Salah scored twice. This crazy result happened just the day after Spurs 6-1 win at Old Trafford.
Ten years and a day after losing 6-1 at home to Man City, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United were once again put to the sword, this time by a rampant Liverpool. Mo Salah scored a hat-trick and Naby Keita and Diogo Jota also found the net as Liverpool led 4-0 at half time and added a fifth in the second half before Paul Pogba was dismissed for a poor foul on Keita.
Manchester City scored six once again against Manchester United with Phil Foden and Erling Haaland both registering hat-tricks in this incredible win. City actually led 6-1, but two late United goals made the scoreline slightly more respectable.
If the 5-0 thrashing at Old Trafford still smarted for United, then this trip to Anfield opened up all those wounds and more besides. After a tight first half, Cody Gakpo put Liverpool in front just before half time. But in the second half, United collapsed with the Reds seeing Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah all scored twice, while Roberto Firmino added a late seventh goal to complete the humiliation.
After a controversial 2-2 draw earlier on in the season, Arsenal gained revenge against rivals Man City in style. Pep Guardiola's team went behind to an early Martin Odegaard strike, but in the second half Erling Haaland levelled. However, after that, Arsenal took full control, with Lewis-Skelly, Havertz and Nwaneri all scoring to hand the Gunners a stunning win over their title rivals.
While I have not included all the crazy results in the Premier League over the years, it is clear that these strange results can happen. So, with that in mind, are they worth having a bet on occasionally?
One positive to note is that the odds on these generally unusual scorelines are, of course, very high.
Indeed, with these strange score lines, Bookies tend to cap their odds at around 150/1 to 200/1 for all the shocking scorelines (for example, in a recent Merseyside derby, the odds on Liverpool to beat Everton 6-5 were 200/1 shot with some bookies, as was the odds on Liverpool to win 9-1).
However, there have been thousands and thousands of Premier League games over the years. Within those results, there are relatively few genuine shocking scorelines, such as a top team being handed a massive defeat.
That means that even at odds of 200/1, it still makes these bets unattractive for punters. Chiefly because your bet is almost certain to be a loser.
