SK Telecom Take 2015 Proleague Title

After ten long hard months of competition and a myriad of battles pitting Zerg against Protoss against Terrans, the overall 2015 SK Telecom SK Telecom Proleague eSports BettingProleague reached a climax on Saturday with Jin Air Green Wings taking on bookies favourites SK Telecom T1 for the overall title.

The two best South Korean StarCraft 2 teams were packed with talented players and with six matchups scheduled, plus a seventh ‘Ace’ Game timetabled if required, the stakes were high in front of a packed crowd at the Lotte World Garden Stage, at the Lotte World theme park, Seoul.

The action begin with the opening match where Jin Air Green Wings got off to the best possible start with Cure defeating Sorry of SK Telecom T1. However the lead was short-lived as soon after Dream defeated Maru to bring SK Telecom back level after two games.

In the third game, the hot favourite to win soO further pushed home SK Telecom T1’s advantage with a comprehensive win over Jin Air’s Pigbaby. However it was the fourth match up of the final that many fans felt would be the pivotal game in this final.

Here, INnoVation of SK Telecom took on sOs of Jin Air in one of the most hotly contested match ups of the entire competition. Many experts felt that Jin Air’s hopes of victory lay on sOs shoulders, but in the end it was INnoVation who triumphed, giving SK Telecom a huge 3-1 advantage and the put title within touching distance.

Jin Air were given hope after the fifth match up when Rogue defeated Dark to make the score 4-2 on the night.

The final game saw Classic of SK Telecom take on Trap of Jin Air with both players opting for the Protoss race. It was a close fought battle initially but in the end, Classic clinched the title in spectacular fashion ensuring that a nerve-shredding final game between the two nominated Ace players wasn’t required.

That victory saw SK Telecom T1 claim the $42.400 first prize with Jin Air Green Wings taking home the second prize of $17,000. After also winning two rounds (each worth $14,235) plus a runner’s up finish worth $4,745, it has certainly been a lucrative few months for SK Telecom who took home the lion’s share of the $150,000 prize pool.

The result was a sweet victory for SK Telecom T1 who lost in last year’s final to KT Rolster, the 2014 Proleague Champions.

There’s little doubting that the best team won the competition once again. Despite their great form in the playoffs in general, Jin Air Green Wings never won a round in the event, finishing runners up on three occasions. SK Telecom won both Round 1 and Round 3, as well as finishing runners up in Round 4 and clearly performed the best of all the teams over the course of the tournament.

As such, SK Telecom T1 will be deserving defending Champions when the 2016 SK Telecom Proleague kicks off in a couple of months time this December. Will any other top StarCraft 2 team have the ability to stop them winning their second title?
