Let’s now preview the games coming up in the Carabao Cup Third Round this week.

Carabao Cup Third Round – 7.45 kick off unless stated

Tuesday 22nd September

  • Leyton Orient v Tottenham (6.00)
  • West Brom v Brentford (7.00)
  • Newport County v Watford (7.00)
  • West Ham v Hull City (7.30)
  • Luton Town v Manchester United (8.15)

Tuesday’s games kick off with a rare London derby between League Two Leyton Orient and Premier League side Tottenham who will be very confident after a 5-2 win away to Southampton on Sunday. As with most top Premier League teams, I expect Spurs to rest a few key men for this game but they should still have more than enough quality to progress.

The other Premier League teams have some tricky games but I would expect them to progress with Man Utd’s trip to Luton and West Brom’s home tie with Brentford looking somewhat tricky.  The non-Premier League game sees Newport take on Watford and I would expect Watford to come through that game against the League Two side.

So while there are a couple of tricky looking fixtures on Tuesday night I think the Premier League sides will generally progress along with Watford into the fourth round draw (which will take place later this week).

Wednesday 23rd September

  • Stoke City v Gillingham (7.00)
  • Fulham v Sheffield Wednesday (7.00)
  • Millwall v Burnley (7.00)
  • Preston v Brighton (7.00)
  • Fleetwood Town v Everton
  • Morecambe v Newcastle
  • Chelsea v Barnsley
  • Leicester City v Arsenal

There are eight games on Tuesday and the only all Premier League clash takes place this evening and it is a cracking game as Leicester face Arsenal in what should be a cracker and a difficult one to call the result of, although Arsenal’s improved form of late, especially in the cup competitions, probably has me edging towards them winning this game.

I’d expect Chelsea to comfortably get past Barnsley and likewise, Newcastle should not have too many difficulties in getting past a Morecambe side that were beaten 5-0 at home in League Two last weekend. Everton should also get past Fleetwood, while I think Brighton may need extra time or penalties to get past Preston.

Burnley against Millwall will be interesting and if there is going to be a shock this evening then that is the game that I would earmark as a potential upset, especially if Burnley play a weaker than usual side. Finally, I think Fulham should do enough to get past Sheffield Wednesday while in the game with no Premier League interest, I’d back Championship Stoke to move into the next round at the expense of Gillingham.

Thursday 24th September

  • Bristol City v Aston Villa (7.00)
  • Lincoln City v Liverpool
  • Man City v Bournemouth

The week of Carabao Cup ties concludes on Thursday night with the final three games and all matches see a Premier League side take on a team from outside the top flight. Aston Villa face a very tricky trip to Bristol City in what could well be a potential banana skin for the Birmingham-based side. The other two games see two of the favourites for the tournament facing off as Liverpool head east to take on Lincoln City while the team that have won this cup for the past two years. Manchester City, get their defence of their title underway at home to Bournemouth and I would expect the top two from the Premier League in the last two years to make confident progress into the next round.

So the question is, which team is going to win the trophy this year? Let’s take a look at the latest betting for the outright winner market with bet365.

Carabao Cup Outright Winner Market

  • Manchester City – 3/1 favourites
  • Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton – 8/1
  • Manchester United – 9/1
  • Tottenham – 10/1
  • Arsenal – 14/1
  • Leicester, West Brom – 20/1
  • Burnley, Brighton – 25/1
  • West Ham, Newcastle Utd, Aston Villa – 28/1
  • Fulham 33/1
  • 40-1 bar.

Manchester City seem to be the bookies pick once again and given their record in this competition and the depth of their squad, that looks a very tempting bet. For an outside bet, the vastly improving Everton could well be an interesting bet at 8/1, while Liverpool are due a good cup run domestically and they are also 8/1. My pick though would still be Manchester City.
