Over the last few weeks we have looked at some of the top games and fixtures taking place in the Premier League in England, but for this weeks article, we are going to change focus slightly and broaden our horizons to include the two other top European leagues that are completing their seasons at the moment, La Liga in Spain and Serie A in Italy, and for those leagues and the Premier League, we are going to look at the key battles to be fought over the remaining games.
While in England the destination of the title is already known, as Liverpool have already claimed the crown, in Spain and Italy, things are not quite so clear cut at both the top and bottom of the table, so in this article, we are going to look at these issues and bring you our selection of tips and bets that you would maybe like to make on these season-defining races.

Serie A – Italy
- Title Race
The Serie A title race took a decisive turn this past weekend with Juventus beating Torino 4-1 in the Turin derby, while AC Milan surprisingly defeated Lazio in Rome by a 3-0 scoreline which now hands Juventus a seven-point lead over Lazio with just 8 games left to play in the season.
The two teams will meet on the 20th July in Turin in what is now a must win game for Lazio. Inter are four points back of Lazio in third, a point ahead of Atalanta, but it now seems to be a question of when and not if Juventus will net their ninth Serie A title in a row.
Odds to win Serie A – Juventus (1/20), Lazio (9/1), Inter (50/1), Atalanta (250/1)
- Champions League/Europa League Qualification
Serie A will see the top four qualify for the Champions League, plus 5th and 6th spot teams will join Napoli in the Europa League next season, with Napoli having already claimed the Coppa Italia. Napoli currently occupy sixth spot so this means it is likely that the team finishing 7th in the table (currently Milan), would claim a Europa League spot next season too.
The race for the Champions League spots though looks done with fourth placed Atalanta a staggerring 15 points clear of Roma and Napoli in 5th and 6th. Milan are four points ahead of Verona in seventh in what would be the final qualification spot for the Europa League and in truth, I think it would be a shock if those seven teams did not make up the qualifiers.
Champions League Qualifiers Prediction – Juventus, Lazio, Inter Milan, Atalanta
Europe League Qualifiers Prediction – Napoli (confirmed as Coppa Italia Winners), AS Roma and Milan.
Serie A now has just three relegation places (reduced from four) and the current table doesn’t look good for either SPAL (who have 19 points) or Brescia (who have 21). They are behind Lecce who have 25 points, but Lecce are just two points behind Genoa in 17th. Torino are 16th four points clear of Genoa, so the relegation battle does seem to be between the bottom four at the moment.
For me, Brescia and SPAL are already condemned to the drop and I think Lecce’s woeful defence (70 goals conceded in 30 games) will be their undoing.
Relegation Tips – SPAL (1/40), Brescia (1/33) and Lecce (1/5).
La Liga – Spain
- Title Race
Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is a two-horse title race in La Liga, although Barcelona’s dip in form has seen Real Madrid open up a four point lead on their Catalan rivals with just four games of the season remaining. Real now have 77 points from their 34 games, while Barcelona have taken 73. They are 11 points ahead of Atletico in third who are five points ahead of Sevilla in fourth.
Both teams don’t have the most daunting of run ins and as such, it would take a major stumble from Real Madrid to allow Barcelona back into the title race now, as the odds below suggest and in truth I cannot see that happening.
Odds to win La Liga – Real Madrid (1/14), Barcelona (8/1)
- Champions League/Europa League Qualification
The top four in La Liga will qualify for the Champions League next season and Real Madrid and Barcelona have already confirmed their place in the tournament while Atletico Madrid need just one more point from their final four games to also confirm their spot.
The final spot in the Champions League, plus the t could be more keenly contested with Sevilla, Villarreal, Getafe, Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao in with a shout. This matter is further complicated by the as yet to be rearranged Copa Del Rey final, which Sociedad and Bilbao will contest, with the winner claiming a Europa League spot.
For me, while I can see the top four sides qualifying for the Champions League, the real interest in La Liga is who will secure those Europa League qualifying spots.
Champions League Qualifiers Prediction – Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla
Europa League Qualfiiers Prediction – Villarreal, Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao
It looks like the relegation battle in Spain is already sorted with Espanyol 12 points from safety and already confirmed as relegated, Leganes 8 points from safety and Mallorca 7 points from being safe. With just four games to go, and having a much worse goal difference than the teams directly above them in the table, I cannot see any way those three teams will survive in La Liga this season.
Relegation Tips – Espanyol, Leganes (1/33), Mallorca (1/8)
Premier League – England
- Title Race
The title race is over in England with Liverpool being crowned Champions after Manchester City lost 2-1 to Chelsea last week. After the weekend games, Manchester City are now 23 points behind Liverpool at the top of the table.
- Champions League/Europa League Qualification
With Liverpool confirmed as top and Man City all but confirmed as second place, the real race in the Premier League is for the two other Champions League qualification spots, with Chelsea, Leicester City, Manchester United, Wolves and possibly Arsenal in with a chance. With Man City winning the League Cup, and Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City and Arsenal contesting the FA Cup Semifinals, it looks likely that the team finishing 6th will earn a Europa League place and the team finishing 7th could too.
However, if Manchester City are expelled from Europe for 2 seasons, then the team finishing 5th could earn a Champions League spot and the team finishing 8th could sneak into the Europa League.
We’re going to assume City’s appeal succeeds and predict the following for each competition.
Champions League Qualification Predictions: Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Manchester United
Europa League Qualification Predictions – Leicester City, Wolves, Arsenal
However, if Man City are expelled from Europe then Leicester would be my pick for the Champions League, with Sheffield United taking the other Europa League place.
It looks like Norwich City are already relegated as they are now eight points off safety with just five games to play. The real battle looks to be between Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Watford and West Ham for the remaining two relegation spots.
At the moment, Bournemouth and Villa occupy those spots and both have a worse goal difference than the teams above them and their form is also worrying and as such, my feeling is that these will be the two teams to drop down into the Championship with Norwich.
Relegation Odds – Norwich (1/500), Bournemouth (1/8), Aston Villa (2/7)
