The dynastic team of this century, no team has dominated their division nor the NFL in quite the way the New England Patriots have done so since the year 2001. However, with veteran Bill Belichick still at the helm, this is very much a new look team finding its feet in the AFC East.

Mac Jones has inherited the starting quarterback role and made an excellent job of it last season and he should continue to improve, however it is the Patriots fine defense that was key for them last season, and that has taken a few hits in the off-season period.

With four tough games to kick off the season, we should have a very good idea of how good, or how bad, this Patriots team is early in the campaign.

New England Patriots – Strengths

  • Mac Jones looked to be developing very nicely into a quality NFL quarterback and his development should continue well in this offense.
  • As one of the best coaches in history, Bill Belichick will be able to get the best out of every player he keeps on his 53-man roster.
  • Cole Strange has the potential to be an excellent addition to the offensive line, affording Jones more protection and opening up the running game.

New England Patriots – Weaknesses

  • The Patriots have lost a lot of star quality in defense, especially in the secondary and for a team that was not that great against the pass in the last couple of years, that is a huge worry.
  • There is a lack of top calibre NFL talent in this squad, perhaps the most in the past 20 years for the Patriots.
  • This isn’t a team that is built to score quickly. Can they come back if they fall behind in a game? I am not so sure.

Season Predictions & Top Betting Picks For The New England Patriots

  • Regular Season Record Prediction – 8-9
  • Playoffs? – No
  • Super Bowl Winning Odds – 35/1
  • Conference Champion Odds – 18/1
  • Divisional Winner Odds – 17/4
  • Best Player on Offense – Mac Jones QB
  • Best Player on Defense – Matt Judon OLB
  • Best Rookie – Cole Strange LG
  • Surprise Of The Season – Patriots to struggle somewhat on defense and finish third in the division, just a couple of games ahead of the resurgent Jets.

After losing a number of key players in the off-season, I think the Patriots may struggle a little this year. Jones will lead the offense well but I can see this defense having some tough games against the Dolphins and Jets, which may mean the Patriots are relegated to third best in the AFC East.
