Who says poker is just for men? It’s true that men have an outsized representation in the game, but it’s also fair to say that the fairer sex KICK BUTT on the felt. To remind you of that fact, let’s chat about some of our favorite female poker players and what makes them so good at the game.
Kristen Bicknell
From the mid-2000s, Kristen Bicknell has been grinding away online. And when we say grinding, we mean it. She plays literally millions of hands every single year. That is dedication to the sport.
And has it paid off? You bet your ass it has. This Canadian card shark has seen plenty of action at live events too since her early days, but while a lot of the biggest events in poker went online in 2020, she had some incredible moments. These included nine Super High Roller Bowl cashes and netting her third World Series of Poker bracelet.
Vanessa Selbst
If you know one female poker player, we’re betting Vanessa Selbst is the name you know. She is an insane poker player, reaching the top spot on the Global Poker Index and banking over $11 million throughout her poker career. That makes her the highest earning female poker player ever.
This Brooklynite has won the top title at the North American Poker Tour Main Event two years in a row, three World Series of Poker bracelets and a sweet $1.4 million score at the PCA High Roller. If your head isn’t spinning after all that, we’re not quite sure what would impress you.
Although she announced her retirement a few years back, she hasn’t quite vanished into the sunset. Recently she’s become a WPT ambassador and has been playing a couple of tournaments too. The poker world can breath a sign of relief!
Maria Ho
Little did Maria Ho’s classmates know that when she was learning the ropes of poker as a college student, she’d one day turn this hobby into her career. And a pretty darn exceptional career at that. We’re talking Women in Poker Hall of Fame levels of success here!
Right after college she decided to turn pro and quickly made herself at home on the live event circuit. It didn’t take her long to reach the upper echelons, with her first big World Series of Poker score under her belt by the time she was 24. And no, it wasn’t a fluke at the WSOP. She’s made 63 cashes to date at the WSOP since then, including five final tables.
So far, she’s made well over $4 million during her career, but that hasn’t stopped her from expanding her horizons beyond the felt. She’s also made a name for herself as a commentator and TV host.
