The current season in the Premier League has been remarkable for a number of reasons. Liverpool have run away with the league title, securing it at the earliest point any team has managed to do so in the competition’s history. It is also the latest that any Premier League season will finish and it is also one of the strangest due to the number of games being played at empty stadia across the country.
However, while there are a number of issues that have been resolved in the Premier League this season, there are a large number that have not yet been decided and which could or will be decided this weekend on the final matchday of the season. There are still two games to be played of Matchday 37 tonight (Manchester United take on West Ham, followed by Liverpool facing Chelsea, after which the Reds will receive the Premier League trophy). The outcome of those games could affect what is at stake on Sunday too.

Let’s now see what issues have already been resolved in the Premier League this season, as well as those still to be decided, before we review the final set of games taking place on Sunday and what could happen regarding the teams involved in either European qualification or relegation battles in the Premier League.
Premier League 2019/20 – Issues Resolved
Premier League Champions – Liverpool
Qualified for the Champions League next season: Liverpool and Manchester City
Relegated from the Premier League – Norwich City
Will not qualify for a European Qualification Spot or be Relegated – Sheffield United, Burnley, Arsenal, Everton, Southampton, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Brighton.
Matchday 37 Issues
If West Ham can take a point or better against Manchester United tonight, then they will also be safe from relegation, however the Hammer’s goal difference is 13 better than the teams three points behind them so they should already be safe barring a massive defeat in their final two games and big wins for either Watford or Aston Villa in their final game.
Additionally, if Chelsea win at Anfield later on tonight, they will also secure a spot in the Champions League next season regardless of how they get on in their final game. A draw would also secure them a Champions League spot, if Manchester United also lose to West Ham tonight, as Manchester United and Leicester must face each other on the final day of the season.
Premier League Final Day Fixtures
All games kick off at 4pm on Sunday 26th July. The key games that will resolve European qualification or relegation issues are highlighted in bold.
- Arsenal v Watford
- Burnley v Brighton
- Chelsea v Wolves
- Crystal Palace v Tottenham
- Everton v Bournemouth
- Leicester City v Manchester United
- Manchester City v Norwich City
- Newcastle United v Liverpool
- Southampton v Sheffield United
- West Ham v Aston Villa
The Key Battlegrounds
- Champions League/Europa League Qualification
Chelsea could be qualified for the Champions League before their game with Wolves, but if they are not then their fans will have one ear on the Leicester v Man Utd clash at the King Power Stadium. One win from Chelsea from their remaining two games will see them qualify while who Man Utd need four points from their last two games to be assured of Champions League football, although they could claim this by winning the Europa League too. Leicester will likely have to win their last game in order to stand a realistic chance of Champions League football this season, but they will at the very least participate in the Europa League.
Tottenham and Wolves are contesting the final definite Europa League spot in 6th with Wolves one point ahead at the time of writing. A win for Wolves at Chelsea would secure that spot. However, if Spurs win and Wolves draw or lose, Spurs would finish sixth to secure it. However, if Chelsea win the FA Cup ahead of Arsenal, then 7th place would also qualify for the Europa League. Similarly, if Wolves were to win the Europa League, then they would qualify for the Champions League and if they had earned a Europa League spot, their place would go to the next best team not yet qualified.
If we assume West Ham are safe, then the issue here is whether it is Watford, Bournemouth or Aston Villa to go down with Norwich. Only one of those teams will escape the drop. On paper, Watford have the more difficult game away to West Ham but they are level on points with Aston Villa, which means Watford have to better Villa’s performance in order to leapfrog them in the table.
Watford and Villa both could lose, but it will be the team that loses least heavily if this is the case, that will stay up, but then that brings Bournemouth into the equation. If Bournemouth can beat Everton and Villa and Watford lose, then Bournemouth would stay up. If Villa or Watford get a point or better in their games, then Bournemouth are relegated regardless of how they get on at Goodison.
It is a highly complex situation and promises to be an exciting climax to the season at both ends of the table!
