Last week, after a wait of several months, the UEFA Europa League and Champions League got back underway with the remaining Round of 16 ties being played in both competitions. Most games were the second leg of matches first played back in February, but a couple in the Europa League were one-off ties played in Germany between teams that had seen their first leg tie postponed.

Now, the action in the Europa League all switches to Germany with the four quarterfinals taking place at various venues across the country. Both competitions will have a new look for this phase of the tournament with all matches from now until the final being played at a neutral venue over one leg, with extra time and penalties used to decide the winner if required.

Europa League Quarterfinal Draw

All games kick off at 8pm on both nights. All matches are single leg games played to a conclusion on the same night, with extra time and penalties used to decide the winner if required. Away goals rule is not in play from the quarterfinal stage onwards.

Monday 10th August

  • Inter Milan v Bayer Leverkusen – Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf

For me, this is one of the more intriguing games of the quarterfinals between two sides I feel are pretty well-matched. I don’t feel Leverkusen really have any advantage from playing in Germany and being German, and Inter were good value for their win over Getafe, despite a somewhat slow start from the Italians in that game.

Bayer Leverkusen were a little off the pace initially against Rangers but ran out 1-0 winners comfortably in the end but I think both teams will feel they will need to up their games considerably for this quarterfinal tie.

For me, this is a close call and you can make a good case for either side, but I just feel Inter have that extra touch of quality in key positions and that could be the difference between the two teams.

Match Tip – Inter to win – 21/20

  • Manchester United v Copenhagen – RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne

Despite leading 5-0 from the away leg, Manchester United had to battle back from a 1-0 deficit to beat LASK Linz 2-1 at Old Trafford, while Copenhagen were very strong at home and thoroughly deserved their 3-0 win over Istanbul Basaksehir, which moved them into the quarterfinal stages.

Of the two, Manchester United are the clear favourites here and while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s form over the whole of the season has been erratic at the start, it has been much better of late and they have been strong in the Europa League in the main.

Copenhagen will try and match that quality with effort, endeavour and determination but I think it will be a forlorn task and I do expect Manchester United to make steady progress into the semifinals.

Match Tip – Man Utd to win – 2/7.

Tuesday 11th August

  • Shakhtar Donetsk v FC Basel – Veltins-Arena, Gelsenkirchen

Both these teams had relatively straightforward routes into the quarterfinals thanks to solid performances in the away tie in the first leg of their Round of 16 matches. Donetsk were 2-1 up over Wolfsburg and scored three goals late in the second leg for a very comfortable 3-0 win as the German side essentially fell to pieces in the last five minutes or so.

FC Basel were 3-0 up from the away trip to Eintracht Frankfurt kept things calm in Switzerland and came away with a 1-0 win to move into the quarterfinals in good form and they will feel confident that they can cause an upset here against a Donetsk side who have been well-beaten by Manchester City, twice, in the Champions League in the autumn.

Donetsk’s Brazilian influence is key to their chances of success and I can see them playing a key role here as I am backing the Ukranian side to make it into the semifinals.

Match Tip – Shakhtar Donetsk to win – 10/11

  • Wolves v Sevilla – MSV Arena, Duisburg

Wolves have reached this stage of the competition for the first time since the 1971/72 season where they were defeated in the final by Tottenham. They face a Sevilla side who have won this tournament a record five times over the years and who have a superb record against English opponents, losing just one of eight games against the, in the knockout stages of European football.

For me, this along with the Inter Milan game on Monday, is the pick of the fixtures in terms of the matched quality of both sides. Sevilla showed their class in beating an in form Roma in the last round, but even so I still feel this Wolves team is packed with star quality and will give the Spaniards a real run for their money.

That said, Sevilla’s record against English sides in knockout games cannot be ignored and they have won the tournament every time they have reached the quarterfinals previously,  but I don’t quite see them having the attacking power they had in previous years. As such I think this game will be a close one and it may well require extra time and penalties to decide the winner.

Match Tip – Draw at 90 minutes – 23/10 with bet365.
