EPL Matchday 13 – News Stories, Match Reviews and Gossip

Arsenal and Chelsea: A Unique Tiebreaker

In the latest Premier League standings, both Arsenal and Chelsea find themselves level on points, trailing behind the league leaders, Liverpool. After 13 games, both teams have identical records with seven wins, four draws, and two defeats.

They have each scored 26 goals and conceded 14. However, Arsenal is placed above Chelsea not due to alphabetical order but because of a unique tiebreaker criterion.

The usual tiebreakers such as points, goal difference, and goals scored are all equal for both teams. Even their head-to-head record is tied, as they drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. The deciding factor is the away goals scored in head-to-head matches, with Gabriel Martinelli’s goal at Stamford Bridge giving Arsenal the edge.

Liverpool’s Dominance Over Manchester City

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to nine points by defeating Manchester City 2-0 at Anfield on EPL Matchday 13. This victory allowed Liverpool to go nine points clear of second place Arsenal and Chelsea and eleven points ahead of Brighton and Man City.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring after just 12 minutes with a far post finish from Mo Salah’s superb cross. It following a blistering start by the Reds who could have been 3-0 up inside the opening quarter of an hour. Mohamed Salah then secured the win with a 75th minute second-half penalty.

Liverpool is now 11 points clear of reigning champions Manchester City who have now gone seven games without a win, six of those ending in defeat. During the game Pep Guardiola, City’s manager, was taunted by tongue-in-cheek “Sacked in the Morning” chants from Liverpool fans, but responded in good humour by holding up six fingers to signify his titles won with City.

Reds boss Arne Slot praised his team’s performance as almost perfect, highlighting their work rate and energy. He noted challenges like injuries but emphasized staying focused for upcoming matches against Newcastle and Everton.

Virgil van Dijk, the Liverpool captain, emphasized focusing on future games without getting complacent despite being 11 points ahead of opponents. He acknowledged City’s quality but praised his team’s solid defence.

Compared to their 2019-20 title-winning season, Liverpool is in a stronger position after 13 games, being nine points above second place Arsenal and Chelsea and eleven above City. Mohamed Salah has been involved in two or more goals or assists in eight matches this season, doing so against top teams like Manchester City and United.

Aside from the contract situation around Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, it has been an almost perfect start to the season for the Reds, who have also played seven of the nine other teams inside the top ten in the EPL.

Manchester City’s Struggles Continue

Manchester City has failed to win in their last seven matches, losing four consecutive Premier League games for the first time since August 2008 under Guardiola’s management. City have lost six of the last seven, drawing the other 3-3 with Feyenoord in the Champions League, despite being 3-0 up with just 16 minutes of the game to go.

After the EPL Matchday 13 game at Anfield, Guardiola acknowledged Liverpool’s strong start and City’s struggles, expressing hope that things will improve as they reset and build from their current situation.

With a midweek set of Premier League fixtures this week, followed by another round of games at the weekend, City have the opportunity to get back to winning ways next on Wednesday night when they take on Nottingham Forest at the Etihad.

They then travel to London on Saturday to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Arsenal Put West Ham to the Sword

Arsenal moved second in the Premier League at the weekend thanks to their 5-2 win away to West Ham United. Mikel Arteta’s team has hit top form once again after a slump in form that coincided with an injury to midfielder Martin Odegaard.

Now that the Norwegian has returned to first team action, notching a goal in the game at West Ham, Arsenal look very strong once again.

All seven goals in this crazy game came in the first half, with five different scorers for Arsenal including Bukayo Saka, Gabriel and Leandro Trossard.

It was another poor defeat for West Ham and keeps the pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui ahead of their next game in midweek at Leicester City on Tuesday.

Amorim’s Manchester United’s Strong Start at Old Trafford

In his first game at Old Trafford on EPL Matchday 13, new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim celebrated a 4-0 victory for his team over struggling Everton.

Doubles for both Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee will help both the forwards with their confidence for the busy run of games coming up leading into the packed festive and New Year period.

United were far superior to a lacklustre Everton on the day and richly deserved the win, while keeping a clean sheet at the other end will also do their defensive confidence no harm at all.

The win saw United move up to ninth in the table on 19 points and they are now just four points outside of the top four. However, it is a very compact table from second place to 13th with just seven points between Arsenal in second and Bournemouth in 13th.
