This week sees the second round of Champions League fixtures in the Group Stage of the tournament. Last time out, Manchester United and Liverpool both recorded fine wins in their opening games, but it was a different story for Manchester City and Tottenham who both went down to 2-1 defeats respectively.

We are going to preview the games taking place across Tuesday and Wednesday evenings this week in each of the eight groups of the tournament and we will bring you the current standings in each of the groups.

Group A

Week One Results:

  • AS Monaco 1 (Grandsir 18)
  • Atletico Madrid 2 (Costa 31, Giminez 45+1)

  • Club Brugge 0
  • Borussia Dortmund 1 (Pulisic 85)

Group A Table

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Atletico Madrid 1 1 0 0 2 1 1 3
2 Borussia Dortmund 1 1 0 0 1 0 1 3
3 AS Monaco 1 0 0 1 1 2 -1 0
4 Club Brugge 1 0 0 1 0 1 -1 0

Week Two Fixtures

Wednesday 3rd October

8.00pm – Atletico Madrid v Club Brugge

This is a game Atletico Madrid will win to nil, but the odds on that bet are not particularly appealing. So instead, I am going to back Saul Niguez of Atletico Madrid to score at any time in the game at odds of 7/2 with bet365.

8.00pm – Borussia Dortmund v AS Monaco

Dortmund and Atletico have already got control of Group A following two away wins in the opening round of games and with AS Monaco struggline in Ligue 1, I think the German side will cruise to another victory here. Back Paco Alcacer to score anytime for Dortmund here at even money.

Group B

Week One Results:

  • Barcelona 4 (Messi 31,77,87, Dembele 74)
  • PSV Eindhoven 0

  • Inter Milan 2 (Icardi 85, Vecino 90+2)
  • Tottenham 1 (Eriksen 53)

Group B Table

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Barcelona 1 1 0 0 4 0 +4 3
2 Inter Milan 1 1 0 0 2 1 +1 3
3 Tottenham 1 0 0 1 1 2 -1 0
4 PSV Eindhoven 1 0 0 1 0 4 -4 0

Week Two Fixtures

Wednesday 3rd October

8.00pm – Tottenham v Barcelona

Last season Spurs drew away to Real Madrid before beating the eventual winners 3-1 at Wembley. They will need a similarly brilliant display to defeat Barcelona here. The Spanish side though are not in great form, so I think this will be a close one and I think the draw at 3/1 is the top option here.

8.00pm – PSV Eindhoven v Inter Milan

Inter will know a win here would put them in a very strong position in Group B but they face a PSV team that is very difficult to beat at home. Inter weren’t that great at Spurs and I think this is a game which could see an upset. I’m backing PSV for the win here at 21/10.

Group C

Week One Results:

  • Red Star Belgrade 0
  • Napoli 0

  • Liverpool 3 (Sturridge 30, Milner 35 (pen), Firmino 90+1)
  • Paris St Germain 2 (Meunier 40, Mbappe 83)

Group C Table

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Liverpool 1 1 0 0 3 2 +1 3
2 Red Star Belgrade 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 1
3 Napoli 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 1
4 Paris St Germain 1 0 0 1 2 3 -1 0

Week Two Fixtures

Wednesday 3rd October

5.55pm – Paris St Germain v Red Star Belgrade

For me, this isn’t a case of whether PSG will win the game, but simply by how many. I can’t see Red Star troubling the PSG defence and I think PSG will be looking to score a few goals here to boost their goal difference. Back PSG to win by three goals at 10/3 with bet365.

8.00pm – Napoli v Liverpool

Napoli were thumped 5-0 by Liverpool in a pre-season friendly at Anfield and they were quick to voice their displeasure at being drawn in the same group as the Reds. Napoli are strong at home but the Reds are so dangerous on the counter and I can see that being the difference here. I’m backing a big win for Liverpool here at 23/20 with bet365.

Group D

Week One Results:

  • Galatasaray 3 (Rodrigues 9, Derdiyok 67, Inan 90+4 (pen))
  • Lokomotiv Moscow 0

  • Schalke 04 1 (Embolo 64)
  • FC Porto 1 (Monteiro 75 (pen))

Group D Table

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Galatasaray 1 1 0 0 3 0 +3 3
2 FC Porto 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 1
3 Schalke 04 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 1
4 Lokomotiv Moscow 1 0 0 1 0 3 -3 0

Week Two Fixtures

Wednesday 3rd October

5.55pm – Lokomotive Moscow v Schalke 04

I doubt this game will be exciting many fans outside of the two clubs own fanbase, but with three Champions League points at stake, it is still a huge game. Schalke’s poor start to the season is a real worry and I’m backing Lokomotiv to get the win here by a 2-1 scoreline a 10/1 chance at bet365.

8.00pm – FC Porto v Galatasaray

Porto earned a solid point away to Schalke last time out, while Galatasaray thumped Lokomotiv Moscow at home but the Turkish side are not great travellers. This could be a home win or draw I feel, so I am going to back Moussa Marega of FC Porto to score anytime at even money instead.

Group E

Week One Results:

  • Ajax 3 (Tagliafico 46,90, van de Beek 77)
  • AEK Athens 0

  • Benfica 0
  • Bayern Munich 2 (Lewandowski 10, Sanches 54)

Group E Table

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Ajax 1 1 0 0 3 0 +3 3
2 Bayern Munich 1 1 0 0 2 0 +2 3
3 Benfica 1 0 0 1 0 2 -2 0
4 AEK Athens 1 0 0 1 0 3 -3 0

Week Two Fixtures

Tuesday 2nd October

8.00pm – Bayern Munich v Ajax

Ajax started the competition with a great win over AEK Athens, but they face a massive increase in quality taking on Bayern at the Allianz Arena. The German Champions will be massive favourites here and I can’t back against them. Take Bayern to win and both teams to score – no at 21/20 with bet365.

8.00pm – AEK Athens v Benfica

AEK did well to get past Celtic in the last round of qualifying but they were found out by Ajax in their last game and Benfica won’t be much easier. However, with this being at home and Benfica not travelling very well, I am expecting a close game. Back the draw here at 23/10 with bet365.

Group F

Week One Results:

  • Shakhtar Donetsk 2 (dos Santos 27, Barberan 81)
  • Hoffenheim 2 (Grillitsch 6, Nordtveit 38)

  • Manchester City 1 (Silva 67)
  • Lyon 2 (Cornet 26, Fekir 43)

Group F Table

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Lyon 1 1 0 0 2 1 +1 3
2 Hoffenheim 1 0 1 0 2 2 0 1
3 Shakhtar Donetsk 1 0 1 0 2 2 0 1
4 Manchester City 1 0 0 1 1 2 -1 0

Week Two Fixtures

Tuesday 2nd October

5.55pm – Hoffenheim v Manchester City

City cannot afford to slip up again after their loss to Lyon and they face a tough test against a Hoffenheim side who were very strong in Donetsk last time out. However I don’t see City losing in this group again and I’m backing them to win here. Take City to win and both teams to score at 6/4.

8.00pm – Lyon v Shakhtar Donetsk

Both these sides have good Champions League experience and this won’t be an easy game, but I think home advantage is key and Lyon will be confident after beating City at home. Shakhtar don’t travel very well, hence I think a Lyon win at 17/20 is the solid option here.

Group G

Week One Results:

  • Real Madrid 3 (Isco 45, Bale 58, Mariano 90+1)
  • AS Roma 0

  • Viktoria Plzen 2 (Krmencik 29.41)
  • CSKA Moscow 2 (Chalov 49, Vlasic 90+5 (pen))

Group G Table

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Real Madrid 1 1 0 0 3 0 +3 3
2 CSKA Moscow 1 0 1 0 2 2 0 1
3 Viktoria Plzen 1 0 1 0 2 2 0 1
4 AS Roma 1 0 0 1 0 3 -3 0

Week Two Fixtures

Tuesday 2nd October

8.00pm – CSKA Moscow v Real Madrid

CSKA will be happy with their last gasp point in Plzen, but this is an even tougher test against the current Champions. Gareth Bale could be absent through injury which is a blow for Real, but even so they should be strong enough to get the win here. Back Real Madrid to win and Both Teams to Score – No at 15/8 with bet365.

8.00pm – AS Roma v Viktoria Plzen

Perhaps not the most glamorous game of the week, but coming into this game on the back of a fine derby win over Lazio will give Roma a big boost and they need it following a 3-0 thumping by Real Madrid last time out. Take AS Roma to win to nil at 6/5 with bet365.

Group H

Week One Results:

  • Valencia 0
  • Juventus 2 (Pjanic 45 (pen), 51 (pen))

  • Young Boys 0
  • Manchester United 3 (Pogba 35,44 (pen), Martial 66)

Group H Table

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts
1 Man Utd 1 1 0 0 3 0 +3 3
2 Juventus 1 1 0 0 2 0 +2 3
3 Valencia 1 0 0 1 0 2 -2 0
4 Young Boys 1 0 0 1 0 3 -3 0

Week Two Fixtures

Tuesday 2nd October

5.55pm – Juventus v Young Boys

This should be an easy home win for Juventus and I expect Young Boys to be on the back foot for most of the game, even if Juventus will be without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo. Young Boys gave away a penalty in their last game and I can see them doing likewise here, hence I think the best bet is to back Juventus’ penalty kick taker in Ronaldo’s absence, Miralem Pjanic, as an anytime goalscorer at 11/4.

8.00pm – Manchester United v Valencia

United’s poor domestic form is a worry but they were excellent in Switzerland and this should be a relatively straightforward game for United against a Valencia side who only won their first game in La Liga at the weekend. I like the 7/1 available on Manchester United to win this 2-1.
