Once again, the last round of Champions League matches on Matchday 2 provided us with a mix of expected results and a few that were unexpected. British teams didn’t fare particularly well, with only Manchester City recording wins, with Manchester United earning a draw while both Liverpool and Tottenham went down to defeats.

Here’s the recap of results from Matchday Two in the Champions League, along with the current standings in each of the eight groups.

We landed a few nice bets the last time out, including tipping Paco Alcacer to score anytime, Man City to win and both teams to score and Roma to win to nil, however I am hoping for some better returns on the tips this week.

Champions League

Matchday Three Tips

Group A

Wed 24th Oct – 5.55pm – Club Brugge v AS Monaco

These two teams have been very much second best in Group A and in truth, the two matches between these teams are arguably a playoff for who gets into the Europa League after the New Year. I think the two teams are pretty well matched in terms of form and as such I think the draw at 23/10 is the best option here.

Wed 24th Oct – 8pm – Borussia Dortmund v Atletico Madrid

Without doubt the two class-acts in Group A and the two teams who will progress into the knockout phase of the tournament, meet in Dortmund in the first of their double-header. I think this will be a close game but I can’t see Atletico being beaten here. Diego Simeone has built his reputation on getting results in tough places with Atletico and I think this one has a draw (12/5 with bet365) written all ofer.

Group B

Wed 24th Oct – 5.55pm – PSV Eindhoven v Tottenham

After both these teams lost both their opening ties, this is a must-win game for both teams. PSV began well against Inter before fading and I think Spurs just have the edge here. I see a similar game to the Inter one, where I can see both teams scoring but I think Spurs will land the crucial win and you can back them at 10/11.

Wed 24th Oct – 8pm – Barcelona v Inter Milan

Lionel Messi was simply breathtaking against Tottenham in Barcelona’s last game in this competition and I think he is the catalyst here for what will be another comfortable Barcelona win. Inter have done well to win both their two games, but that streak will end here. Barcelona to win at 3/10.

Group C

Wed 24th Oct – 8pm – Liverpool v Red Star Belgrade

After losing to a last minute goal in Naples last time out, this is now a must win game for Liverpool and I have every confidence they will do precisely that against a Red Star Belgrade team that were thumped 6-1 by PSG last time out, and it could have been at least double that score. The Reds are 1/25 for a reason to win this one and they won’t let you down.

Wed 24th Oct – 8pm – Paris St Germain v Napoli

Napoli are yet to concede in the Champions League this season and despite scoring just one goal, they are top of Group C. However, this is a tough ask against a PSG side that thumped Red Star last time out. If Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani are back in form, this will be a long night for Napoli. Back PSG to win this one at 1/2.

Group D

Wed 24th Oct – 8pm – Galatasaray v Schalke 04

Schalke did well to earn a win on Moscow last time out, but I think Turkey is a much tougher place for the German side to go. The home team beat Moscow 3-0 on home soil in their opening game and I think they’ll likely get a similar result against Schalke here. Galatasaray to win at 8/5 with bet365.

Wed 24th Oct – 8pm – Lokomotiv Moscow v FC Porto

Lokomotiv are in deep trouble following their home loss to Schalke and FC Porto provide another tough test here. Porto are not the best side when travelling though and as such, I think this game has all the hallmarks of finishing in a battling draw, which is a 23/10 shot with bet365.

Group E

Tue 23rd Oct – 5.55pm – AEK Athens v Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich won’t be happy with a home draw to Ajax in the last round but I think the German side will put that right here against an AEK Athens side struggling in the Champions League. Bayern’s quality should be the difference between the teams so back the Germans here at 2/9.

Tue 23rd Oct – 8pm – Ajax v Benfica

Ajax have made a wonderful start in Group E with a comfortable win over AEK followed by a brilliant point away to Bayern Munich. Benfica’s win in Athens was a good one, but I think they’ll find Ajax a much tougher nut to crack. This should be a good game, but I am backing Ajax to just about take the win here at even money.

Group F

Tue 23rd Oct – 8pm – Hoffenheim v Lyon

Hoffenheim fell to a late winner from David Silva against Man City last time out while Lyon came back from 2-0 down to snatch a point at home to Donetsk. This is a tough game for both these sides and both are a little inconsistent. As such, I think the draw at 12/5 is the sensible bet here.

Tue 23rd Oct – 8pm – Shakhtar Donetsk v Man City

These two teams played in this competition last season and it was Shakhtar Donetsk who became the first team to beat City last season, albeit a second string City team. The Ukranian side have landed two draws in the competition this season but I think City, buoyed by that win in Hoffenheim will take the points here, Back City to win at 2/5.

Group G

Tue 23rd Oct – 8pm – Real Madrid v Viktoria Plzen

After a shock defeat to CSKA last time out, Real will bounce back to winning ways here against a well organised Plzen side, but a team that does not possess anywhere near the quality of the home side. This is a simple pick, back Real Madrid to win at 1/14 with bet365.

Tue 23rd Oct – 8pm – AS Roma v CSKA Moscow

Roma bounced back to form with a fine 5-0 win over Plzen last time out and I can see them getting a similar result here, even against a CSKA side that stunned the world with their 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the last batch of games. CSKA’s problem is that they don’t travel well and Roma can beat anybody at home. This should be an easy win for Roma at 4/11.

Group H

Tue 23rd Oct – 8pm – Man Utd v Juventus

What an incredible clash at Old Trafford this promises to be between the top two teams in Group H. Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford following his suspension and he will be the central figure in a game that I think, given the two sides start to the season, Juventus could well come out on top as the winner. Back the Italians here at 5/4.

Tue 23rd Oct – 5.55pm – Young Boys v Valencia

Valencia should get a positive result here against the Swiss team who have struggled in their games with Juventus and Manchester United in the opening two weeks. The Spaniards are looking better than their early season form suggests and I fancy them to pick up a narrow win here. Back Valencia at even money to get the win.
