Can Liverpool Make It Seven Wins from Seven in the EPL on Saturday?

Manchester City are the current Champions of the Premier League and they are still most people’s firm bet to retain the title for a third year in a row after their 8-0 demolition of Cardiff last weekend. However, it is their most competitive rivals Liverpool that have stolen a march on City, winning all six of their Premier League games so far to amass the maximum 18 points from those games.

A fine 2-1 away win at Chelsea last weekend ensured the Reds became the first team ever in Premier League history to start two successive seasons with six wins in a row and after away days at Southampton and Burnley prior to that, Jurgen Klopp’s team are on the road again this weekend as they visit newly promoted Sheffield United to try and make it seven wins in a row.

Let’s now take a look at what the Reds chances are of making it seven in a row on Saturday with a look back at their season so far.

Liverpool Season So Far

Premier League

  • V Norwich City (H) – W 4-1 (Hanley OG, Salah, van Dijk, Origi)
  • V Southampton (A) – W 2-1 (Mane, Firmino)
  • V Arsenal (H) – W 3-1 (Matip, Salah 2)
  • V Burnley (A) – W 3-0 (Wood OG, Mane, Firmino)
  • V Newcastle (H) – W 3-1 (Mane 2, Salah)
  • V Chelsea (A) – W 2-1 (Alexander-Arnold, Firmino)

League Position –  1st

Super Cup

  • V Chelsea (N) – D 2-2 (W 5-4 on penalties) – (Mane 2)

Champions League

  • V Napoli (A) – L 0-2

Goalscorers

  • Sadio Mane – 6
  • Mohamed Salah – 4
  • Roberto Firmino – 3
  • Own Goals – 2
  • Joel Matip, Divock Origi, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold – 1

The Reds pre-season wasn’t all that great, but when the season began in earnest, they started well with a thumping win over Norwich, followed by claiming the Super Cup with a penalties win over Chelsea. Wins against Southampton, Arsenal, Burnley and Newcastle followed in the league before they experienced defeat away to Napoli in their first Champions League Group Stage game.

However, the Reds bounced back from that to record a vital win over Chelsea to keep their 100% start in the Premier League going.

How Sheffield United Shape Up

  • V Chelsea (A) – D 2-2 – (Robinson, Zouma OG)
  • V Southampton (H) – L 0-1
  • V Everton (A) – W 2-0 (Mina OG, Mousset)

Match Information

Sheffield United v Liverpool

  • Venue – Bramhall Lane
  • Kick Off – 12.30pm

It is worth noting that both these teams will play a Carabao Cup tie on Wednesday night in advance of these games with Sheffield United facing Sunderland at home, while Liverpool travel south to take on the MK Dons. Both teams are expected to rest a significant number of first team players for these two games.

Probable Teams

Sheffield United – (5-3-2) – Henderson, Baldock, Stevens, O’Connell, Egan, Basham, Norwood, Fleck, Lundstram, McBurnie, Robinson

Liverpool – (4-3-3) – Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, van Dijk, Matip, Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Salah, Mane, Firmino.

How will the game go?

As evidenced by their last two home performances, both defeats to Southampton and Leicester, the Blades have been stronger on the road where they can counter attack, then when at home and they are expected to have more of the game. Oddly enough, the fact that they face a Liverpool team that will dominate possession may well help them on Saturday.

However, there’s no doubt that this is a massive test for the home side as Liverpool have produced some of their best performances on the road this season and apart from one blip in Naples in the Champions League, they have scored plenty of goals in those wins too.

The sheer quality of the Reds team means that they should be looking to earn a win here and it is almost impossible to see how the home side could stop that. I expect a game which will be dominated in terms of possession by the visitors, with the home teams best chances coming from sporadic counters, or the occasional set piece situation.

Our Top Tips for Sheffield United v Liverpool

Match Result – Liverpool to win (4/11)

It’s not surprising that I have backed Liverpool to win. The odds on the Reds are very short for what is likely to be a tricky game, but at the moment Jurgen Klopp’s team are so consistent that it would be foolhardy to back against them. They don’t look as solid defensively as last season and are conceding a few sloppy goals at times, but they have the knack of getting the result they need.

I do fancy the Reds to keep a clean sheet here and perhaps grab a few goals themselves to take them further clear at the top of the table, at least until Manchester City face Everton later on in the day at Goodison Park.

Correct Score – Sheffield United 0-2 Liverpool (13/2)

After backing Liverpool to win, the question now is what score will that be? No team has blown away Sheffield United this season but it is fair to say that the Reds are a class or two above any team they have faced so far this season. The Reds defence will want that clean sheet and I think against this Blades attack they may get it.

I feel the Reds strikers are going to cause the home side plenty of problems and so I think a 2-0 win, probably with Salah and Firmino (who scores a lot of goal son the road) being the names on the scoresheet.
