Over the weekend, Everton and Liverpool had somewhat contrasting fortunes. Everton’s last gasp defeat to second-placed Leicester City saw them drop remain in a precarious 17th position in the table, just one place outside the relegation zone and left manager Marco Silva’s position at the club under serious risk.

In contrast, city rivals Liverpool managed to survive a late scare and the sending off of goalkeeper Alisson to clinch a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brighton at Anfield, a result which saw them move eleven points clear of Manchester City, 14 points clear of Chelsea and eight points clear of second-placed Leicester City.

Team News

Liverpool will be without the suspended Alisson following his sending off against Brighton, with Adrian to deputise in goal. The Reds will also be missing Fabinho and Matip through injury. With a game away to Bournemouth at the weekend, Jurgen Klopp may elect to make a couple of changes to the team that emerged with a 2-1 win against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Everton’s biggest team news seems to be surrounding manager Marco Silva who is expected to remain in post for the derby game, however he is expected to be under fierce pressure to keep his job with Everton reportedly set to move for Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe.  Everton will also likely be without Theo Walcott, Fabian Delph as well as long term injured Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

Predicted Teams

Liverpool (4-3-3) – Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Van Dijk, Lovren, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Milner, Salah, Firmino, Mane

Everton (5-4-1) – Pickford, Sidibe, Digne, Holgate, Mina, Keane, Davies, Sigurdsson, Richarlison, Iwobi, Calvert-Lewin.

Merseyside Derby Key Facts

  • Everton have not won a Merseyside derby at Anfield for over 20 years.
  • Everton have not won any of the last 19 derby games, though they have drawn 10 of those games, Liverpool winning the other nine.
  • The Toffees have won just four of the last 43 games against the Reds since the turn of the Millennium.
  • In the past six years, Liverpool have twice won this fixture 4-0, back in January 2014 and also in April 2016.
  • From October 2012 to October 2015, six of the seven games between the teams finished in draws.
  • There has been one goal in the last three games between the teams. That was Divock Origi’s fortunate late winner at Anfield in injury time last season.
  • Jurgen Klopp has never lost a game to Everton and his Liverpool team have won five of the eight derby games they have played under the German.

Our Top Merseyside Derby Tips

Match Winner – Liverpool 4/11, Draw 4/1, Everton 15/2

Despite a battling performance away to Leicester City, a game that Everton were unfortunate to bet365-early-soccer-payoutlose late on through a VAR-awarded goal, the Toffee’s defeat at the King Power leaves them in a precarious position facing a team that has dropped just two points all season. Marco Silva has however frustrated Liverpool in his most recent games against them and the under-fire boss will be hoping for a big performance from his team here.

Liverpool were poor against Brighton, especially late on but even with Adrian in goal, I still feel that the Reds have more than enough talent to win this game. I can see them resting Oxlade Chamberlain for this one, with the more combative Milner coming in for him but at 4/11, Liverpool are the smart bet for this market.

Correct Score – Liverpool 3-1 Everton – 11/1

This fixture hasn’t had many goals in recent seasons, just one in the last 270 minutes-plus of football, but I think there is so much at stake in this game that we will see goals today. I can see Everton scoring at Anfield, which has been a rarity in recent times, but with that leaky defence, I can see Liverpool hurting Everton at set pieces and I am backing the Reds to land a comfortable 3-1 victory here.
