Although the tournament may have lost a little of the prestige that it once had, there is no doubt that when it comes to domestic cup competitions in the world today, nothing is as popular around the globe as the FA Cup Final. This year, two London-based teams, Arsenal and Chelsea will battle it out to decide who wins the final piece of domestic silverware available to be won this season for Premier League teams.

For the Gunners, there is more on the line than simply lifting the famous trophy for what would be a record-busting 14th time. A win is the only way Arsenal will earn a place in the Europa League next season. Defeat here and it would mean Wolves would earn that final spot by virtue of their 7th placed finish in the Premier League last weekend.

FA Cup Final

Arsenal v Chelsea

This is the third time that the two London sides have met in the final. Arsenal landed a 2-0 win when the teams met back in May 2020 when goals from Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg were enough to give Arsenal the win.

The Gunners repeated that success in 2017 with a 2-1 victory as an early goal from Alexis Sanchez was wiped out by Diego Costa’s leveller late in the second half, only for Aaron Ramsey to net a winner for the Gunners three minutes following Costa’s leveller.

However, in the two other finals contested between the teams, Chelsea have come out on top, with a 2-1 win in the 2007 League Cup Final, when a Didier Drogba brace wiped out Theo Walcott’s early opener for Arsenal. Then in the latest final, Chelsea were thumping 4-1 winners in the 2019 Europa League final with goals from Olivier Giroud, Pedro and two for Eden Hazard enough to overcome Iwobi’s solitary strike for Arsenal.

Both teams have defeated three Premier League sides on the way to Wembley, though Chelsea have had the tougher games, defeating two Championship sides, plus the teams that finished 1st, 4th and 5th in the Premier League, although it should be noted that Arsenal defeated second placed Manchester City 2-0 in their semifinal.

Recent History – Arsenal v Chelsea

  • 21st January 2020 – Chelsea 2-2 Arsenal (Premier League)
  • 29th December 2019 – Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea (Premier League)
  • 29th May 2019 – Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal (Europa League Final)
  • 19th January 2019 – Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea (Premier League)
  • 18th August 2018 – Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal (Premier League)

The most recent games between the teams have been in favour of Chelsea as they have landed three wins over the last five games. Arsenal have managed just one win in that time, and that came at home to Chelsea.

Both sides current form in the Premier League has been a little patchy, with both sides enjoying some big wins over teams in the top six, but also stuttering to some extremely poor defeats in that time too. As such, despite the difference in position in the league table (Chelsea finished 4th and Arsenal finished 8th) I do expect this to be a very close game.

How will the game go and what are our tips?

Most of the games between these two fierce rivals are generally closely fought games with just one goal separating the teams if there is a winner, and I can see that being the outcome here. I do feel this game has the potential to see goals as I think both sides are better going forward than they are at defending.

I see Chelsea having more of the ball and dominating possession, but I think Arsenal can hit them hard on the counter attack, as they did Manchester City in the semifinal. It will be close, but I still feel Chelsea just have that added extra quality, especially in midfield, and that combined with a bit more experience in these top games, just gives them the edge. Here are my tips:

  • Full Time Result – Chelsea to win – 23/20
  • Correct Score – Arsenal 2-3 Chelsea – 25/1
  • Anytime Goalscorer – Olivier Giroud (Chelsea) – 7/4
