Basic Super Bowl Facts

  • Did you know that although the 1967 game between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs (which the Packers won 35-10) is designated as Super Bowl I, the game wasn’t known as such until 1969? The New York Jets 16-7 win over the Baltimore Colts was the first game promoted as the Super Bowl, with the tag being applied retrospectively to the games played in 1967 and 1968.
  • The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers have the most wins in Super Bowl history with six each, Followed by the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys with five wins apiece. However, as an individual player, Tom Brady has won more Super Bowl rings than any franchise landing seven as a player (six for New England, one for Tampa Bay).
  • The Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills hold the record for most Super Bowl appearances without a win, with 4 appearances and 4 losses in the big game.
  • The only team to win the Super Bowl without losing a game were the 1972 Miami Dolphins who completed a 14-0 season by beating the Browns, Steelers and then the Redskins to land the Super Bowl with a 17-0 record. The New England Patriots had a perfect 16-0 regular season record in the 2007 season and reached the Super Bowl but lost that game to the New York Giants.
  • No team has won the Super Bowl three years in succession. Several have won the trophy two years in a row including the Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos.
  • The record number of losses in a Super Bowl is five, a record held by the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos.
  • No team has played in more Super Bowls than the New England Patriots with 11 appearances. Next best are the Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys who have appeared in eight Super Bowls each.
  • Only four current NFL teams have never appeared in a Super Bowl game. The Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans.
  • 20 of the 32 current NFL teams have won the Super Bowl.
  • NFC Teams have won 27 Super Bowls to the AFC’s 26.
  • The biggest attendance at a Super Bowl was 103,985, which came in January 1980 at Super Bowl XIV at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, where the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 31-19.
  • Only one team has won the Super Bowl on their home turf, that was last year when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers landed their second Super Bowl win at the Raymond James Stadium. The Los Angeles Rams can become the second team to do so this year.
  • No team has ever failed to score a point in the Super Bowl, the lowest scoring teams were the Los Angeles Rams in 2019 who scored three points in their 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins who also scored 3 in a 24-3 loss to Dallas in Super Bowl VI.
  • The largest margin of victory in a Super Bowl came in January 1990 when the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV. The Dallas Cowboys are the only other team to score over 50 points in a Super Bowl when they beat the Buffalo Bills 52-17 in January 1993.
  • The Superdome in New Orleans has hosted the most Super Bowl events with seven, and another is scheduled to take place there in 2024.

Super Bowl Record Breakers

  • In addition to having the most Super Bowl wins of any player or franchise, Tom Brady also has the most Super Bowl MVP awards with five.
  • Jerry Rice holds the record for the most points scored by an individual player in the Super Bowl with 48. Rice also holds the record for most Super Bowl touchdowns by an individual player with 8.
  • The most points scored by a single player in a single Super Bowl is held by James White who scored 20 points for the New England Patriots in their comeback win over Atlanta.
  • Tampa Bay intercepted Oakland quarterback Rich Gannon 5 times in their win in Super Bowl XXXVII, a record for interceptions in a single Super Bowl game. Three of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns.
  • Super Bowl XLVII between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers is the longest Super Bowl game on record from kick off until the end of game at 4 hours and 14 minutes, although this was due to a 34-minute power outage in the third quarter of the game.

Not Happened In A Super Bowl As Yet

  • It has never snowed at a Super Bowl as yet due to the game generally being played either indoors, or in warm-weather venues. However, the game was played once at Super Bowl XLVIII at the MetLife Stadium in New York where snow is possible, but the game was played in warmer than usual conditions.
  • No punt has ever been returned for a touchdown in a Super Bowl. Kick offs have, and punts have been blocked and returned for a score.
  • No Super Bowl has featured two teams that were both Wild Card teams in the playoffs.
  • A Fair Catch Kick, although this is not surprising as the last successful Fair Catch Kick in any NFL game took place in 1976.

So, with so many of these records for this weekend’s Super Bowl still to be written, will any of the records listed above be broken?

Tune in on Sunday to find out!
