Let’s now take a look at the forthcoming quarter final ties in the 2022 FIFA World Cup which are set to be played Friday 9th and Saturday 10th December.
So let’s begin with a recap of how the Round of 16 clashes turned out earlier this week.
FIFA World Cup 2022 – Round of 16 Results
- Netherlands 3-1 United States (Depay 10, Blind 45+1, Dumfries 81), (Wright 76)
A confident performance by the Dutch who withstood some early USA pressure before scoring a lovely goal through Depay and further goals from wingbacks Blind and Dumfries gave them a confident victory over the young American side.
- Argentina 2-1 Australia (Messi 35, Alvarez 57), (Fernandez (OG) 77)
A Lionel Messi masterclass in the second half helped Argentina to progress through to the next stage of the tournament. The little genius put Argentina in front with a well taken first half strike before Manchester City striker Alvarez capitalised on a goalkeeping mistake to make it 2-0. A late consolation gave Australia hope but Argentina moved through comfortably enough.
- France 3-1 Poland (Giroud 44, Mbappe 74,90+1), (Lewandowski 90+9(pen))
It was the Kylian Mbappe show for France against Poland as the striker scored two and set up Olivier Giroud to beat Thierry Henry’s goals record for France. But it was Mbappe who was the star with two outstanding goals as France eased through comfortably.
- England 3-0 Senegal (Henderson 39, Kane 45+3, Saka 57)
After a slow start, England produced their best hour of football from the 30th minute onwards in this game as they comfortably despatched Senegal with Jude Bellingham once again the star of the show. He set up Henderson’s crucial first goal before Harry Kane added a second just before the half and Saka’s second half strike made things very comfortable for the Three Lions.
- Japan 1-1 Croatia (Maeda 43), (Perisic 55) – Croatia win 3-1 on penalties
Japan dominated the first half of this game and deservedly went into the break in front through Celtic’s Maeda. However Croatia’s experience in the second half told and Perisic’s fantastic header brought them level. No further goals followed but Japan could only score one of four penalties as they lost out to their opponents on the dreaded spot kicks.
- Brazil 4-1 South Korea (Vini Jr 7, Neymar 13(pen), Richarlison. 29, Paqueta 36), (Park 76)
Brazil made light work of their South Korean opponents scoring four goals in the opening 36 minutes of this game to effectively put it to bed. Korea grabbed a consolation but by then the game was already well over as a contest as the favourites moved into the quarterfinals comfortably.
- Morocco 0-0 Spain – Morocco win 3-0 on penalties
The only big shock of the Round of 16 saw Spain eliminated from the competition on penalties by Morocco. After an evenly contested first half, Spain dominated possession for the remainder of the game but could not make the breakthrough and they then missed all three penalties they took to allow the African side to deservedly make it through.
- Portugal 6-1 Switzerland (Ramos 17,51,67, Pepe 33, Guerriero 55, Leao 90+2), (Akanji 58)
Switzerland capitulated in embarrassing style in the final Round of 16 game as Portugal scored six goals against them. Goncalo Ramos, in for the dropped Ronaldo, scored a hat-trick, while Pepe, Guerriero and Leah added further goals to move Portugal very easily into the next round.
